DIY Vogue V8930 Coat

DIY Vogue V8930 Coat

OK folks! Have you ever had that ONE thing that you’ve been waiting ALL year to make? Well, this is that pattern for me…

Once I first saw this post from Mimi G, I knew I had to have this coat!  I immediately ordered the pattern here and I actually think this was my very first pattern to order online.  Needless to say, almost 11 months have passed and it’s still 75-80 degrees each day in Dallas but I have finally made my coat 🙂  Yes – it really is that warm this time of year… Pretty unbelievable, but winter weather will come soon enough and I will be ready for it!

Materials Used to Accomplish this Look:

  • 6 yrds of fleece from JoAnn’s, priced at $9.99/yd, but received 50% (on sale) >> $4.99/yd
  • thread (from stash)
  • denim needle (from stash – definitely necessary for the thickness)
  • This coat cost me $30 in fabric, which is pretty damn good when you’re talking about a winter coat… #IJS!

Pattern Review:

This is considered ‘Very Easy’ according to Vogue’s standards and I would agree.  This pattern includes only 4 pattern pieces and LOTS of FABRIC!!  I used the same fabric for both the outer and lining pieces and used almost all of the 6 yards of fleece that I had (purchased from JoAnn’s – info is below).  Cutting time is minimal, which is a PLUS!

I did have an issue following the instructions when I got to the end and needed to connect the ends of the sleeves.  I eventually did the rest of the coat and then completed the ends of the sleeves at the very end (after about 4 attempts fails)

If I didn’t have to work, I could have completed this in one evening.  This is a great pattern for beginners.

Alterations Made:

I cut View C in a medium.  I made no changes to the pattern.  I misread the instructions (moving too fast) and didn’t sew up the pocket gap on the lining pieces and had to sew over the outside of the lining, but I’m okay with it.  I’ll know better next time.

Will I make this pattern again?  I really want one in wine!  When I find the right shade I will add a lining fabric vs lining with the same fleece.  This coat, when lined with fleece, is SO WARM!  I won’t have to layer up while wearing this coat.

Interested in having this coat but don’t want to make it?!

Pretty coat. I consider myself somewhere between beginner and intermediate. I know just enough to be dangerous. I admire your courage. I couldn’t go with Vogue as a first garment; too scared. I gave started to buy a few now in my, “One day when I’m more experienced ” stack.

      Thanks so much Lauren!
I’ve always been drawn to Vogue’s style over other pattern makers, but I agree – I don’t know what I was thinking!! 🙂
